Bill Belichick, the legendary coach with six Super Bowl wins, has made a shocking career change—he’s now coaching college football at the University of North Carolina. And some say he did it to send a strong message to the NFL.
According to ESPN, people close to Belichick revealed he had grown frustrated with the NFL and the direction it was heading. One confidant even said, “This is a big f–k you to the NFL.”
Belichick reportedly felt pressured in his final year with the New England Patriots and sensed that people in the league were doubting his abilities.
He also knew that if he returned to the NFL, there would be a lot of media pressure to perform well right away.
At his first press conference as UNC’s new head coach, Belichick seemed thrilled about the fresh start.
He shared how coaching college football had always been a dream of his. “I grew up around college football with my dad, who coached for 50 years. This feels like coming home,” he said.
Belichick’s move to UNC also has a personal touch. His dad spent decades in college coaching, and this role feels like a way to honor that legacy.
Details of his contract were also revealed: Belichick will earn a base salary of $1 million, plus $9 million in supplemental income.
It’s a big change for a legendary NFL coach, but for Belichick, it’s a chance to prove himself in a whole new way.
