Which Jobs Do Americans Most Associate with Science?

Americans tend to picture scientists in lab coats, but in reality, many professions rely on scientific knowledge. According to a recent Pew Research Center survey, here’s how U.S. adults ranked the science reliance of 12 occupations:

Top occupations Americans see as relying heavily on science:

  • Biologists: 86% say they rely a lot on science
  • Engineers: 76%
  • Registered nurses & paramedics: About 69% each

Moderate reliance on science:

  • Farmers: 58%
  • Electricians: 56%
These roles often use applied science—like biology for crops or physics/electrical theory for wiring.

Lower reliance (but some science involved):

  • Computer programmers: 42% say they rely a lot on science
  • Auto mechanics: 28% rely a lot; 55% rely some

Lowest reliance:

  • Cooks, lawyers, guitarists, TV scriptwriters—small shares say these roles rely heavily on science, though many still use it occasionally.

Key takeaway:
While Americans strongly associate traditional STEM careers with science, they also recognize that roles in health care, skilled trades, and even farming require scientific knowledge. Perceptions are consistent across different demographic groups.
