Ohio’s steel industry is about to get a big boost thanks to President Trump’s tariffs, according to the CEO of JSW Steel USA.
Robert Simon, who has over 30 years of experience in the steel business, says the new tariffs will help his company grow.
He believes the steel plant in Mingo Junction, Ohio, could add 100 jobs in the next year.
Trump’s new tariff plan, which aims to make foreign companies play by the same rules as American ones, is seen as a way to level the playing field.
Simon is excited because his company’s steel production will increase from 68% to 84%, which is higher than Trump’s goal of 80%.
The JSW plant in Ohio was shut down for over seven years before JSW bought it in 2018 and started hiring local workers.
Now, the plant is growing and bringing back families who’ve worked in steel for generations.
With the new tariffs, Simon believes more foreign companies will move their factories to the U.S. to avoid paying extra taxes on their products, which could lead to even more jobs in the country.
This is a “very exciting time,” Simon said.
