Despite the thousands of layoffs at Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, Indeed reports that IT jobs would still be in demand in 2023.

Key Points:

  • In the last several weeks, major IT companies including Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft have all announced big layoffs.
  • However, a list of the top 25 U.S. employment by Indeed indicates that tech jobs are in great demand across the whole American economy in 2023.
  • According to career experts, a variety of industries, including retail, banking, professional services, travel, government, aerospace, health care, and others, are looking for tech-savvy workers to help them expand their online presence.

Despite massive layoffs at well-known IT companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, and Microsoft, career prospects for candidates in the wider tech ecosystem are predicted to be among the best of any industry in 2023, according to a new ranking.

According to Indeed, which compiles an annual list of the top positions for job searchers, eight of the top ten “best jobs” in the U.S. this year are in the technology sector.

According to Indeed’s rankings, the top IT occupations are full-stack developers, followed by data engineers, cloud engineers, senior product managers, back-end developers, site reliability engineers, machine learning engineers, product designers, and engineers for back-end development.

The two non-tech positions in the top 10 were psychiatric nurses and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioners, respectively.

44% of the top 25 positions were in the technology sector.

According to Scott Dobroski, an expert on career trends at Indeed, the possibilities in technology go beyond the traditional technology giants to industries like retail, finance, professional services, travel, and tourism. All of these depend on technologists to develop their companies online presence and business.

The IT skill set is highly sought after by businesses worldwide, according to Dobroski. “Because nowadays, every business is a technology firm.”

Given that Indeed bases its rating on “opportunity” for job searchers, positions had to be rapidly expanding. For instance, in the greatest proportion of all jobs on Indeed, 1,398 full-stack developer opportunities were available out of a million posts. (The front and back ends of a website are built by a full-stack developer.)

Every position on the list pays yearly salaries that are higher than the average for the country. According to Indeed, at least 10% of the roles they advertise allow for remote or hybrid work. It is becoming a more significant factor for American employees.

In the competitive job market right now, employers are ready to look for people with skill sets in “nontraditional methods,” according to Dobroski.

For instance, he added, workers may frequently pick up some fundamental IT skills through certificate programs lasting a few weeks or months, online courses, or software engineering boot camps.

According to Dobroski, current employees, particularly those at major firms, may be able to take advantage of mentoring opportunities and brand-new learning initiatives at work to develop new skills or follow other career routes internally.

Workers should think about how their existing talents may be applied to a different subject, said Dobroski. Some of the top 25 best jobs for 2023’s human resources roles may be able to use abilities from sales. So, thousands of layoffs but there is hope.
