No References? How to Apply Anyway and What to Use Instead

Not having references can feel embarrassing, but it is more common than people admit. Maybe you are new to work. Maybe your last job ended badly. Maybe you were self-employed, caregiving, in school, or out of the workforce. You can still apply. You just need to handle the reference question carefully.

First, do not fake references

Do not make up a supervisor, use a fake company, or ask someone to lie. Employers can check. A fake reference can cost you the job even if your resume was good.

Who can count as a reference?

Possible reference Best for What they can speak about
Former supervisor Most jobs Attendance, performance, teamwork
Coworker or team lead If supervisor is not available Work habits, reliability, communication
Teacher or professor Students or recent graduates Deadlines, projects, writing, participation
Volunteer coordinator No-experience applicants Dependability and service
Client or customer Freelancers/self-employed Quality, communication, follow-through
Coach, mentor, program leader Younger applicants Discipline, character, consistency

What to say if the application asks too early

If the form requires references before an interview, use “Available upon request” only if the field allows text. If it requires names, use real people you have already asked. Do not surprise someone with a reference call.

Script to ask for a reference

Hi [Name], I’m applying for jobs and wanted to ask if you would be comfortable being a professional reference for me. The roles are mostly [customer service/admin/warehouse/remote support]. If contacted, you could speak about my reliability, communication, and ability to follow through. I completely understand if you are not available.

If you left a job badly

You do not need to list the worst manager you ever had. Choose someone who can speak fairly about your work. If the employer asks for your last supervisor specifically, be honest but calm. Do not overexplain the drama.

Build references while you apply

If you truly have nobody, start creating proof now. Volunteer for a short project, take a class, complete a certificate, help at a community event, or do a small freelance task for someone who can confirm your work. CareerOneStop has practical job-search resources at CareerOneStop.org.

Make the rest of your application stronger

If references are weak, your resume needs to be clearer. Use specific proof: attendance, projects, customer help, tools, numbers, and responsibilities. You can also use the DamnJobs career tools to prepare your resume and job-search documents.

No references is not the end. It just means you need to be more intentional about who can vouch for you and what your application proves before the reference stage.
